Discussion Question #6

Now I must refer back to one of Clarington's post- I think that Caroline somehow had profound insight into David. There was an unspoken bond/connection. I agree with Clarington that she was able to "see" his vulnerabilities.... I don't know... maybe she even could tell that he was hiding something... I don't necessarily mean his identity ( maybe) but just that he had a secret and she had breached his wall/barrier. You know they say"birds of a feather, flock together" so she may have had some secrets of her own. These two "kindred spirits" connected in that moment. This ultimately lead to him making her his accomplice in the decision he made to give away his daughter.

I think David married Norah to escape from Caroline. Norah did not have the insight... I don't get the impression that she was a " deep thinker" at least not early on in the book, so it would have been easier for him to "hide" himself with Norah. I don't have a whole lot to say about this because... Norah's background is pretty vague except for her sister Bree. So it is difficult for me to really take a chunk out of this one... I can't wait to read your responses so that you can give me some insight!!

I could not wait for this question! When David saw Caroline after he woke up, he knew she saw a side of him that he had kept hidden for a long time. If you notice right after that he saw Norah and saw her innocence and after a brief courtship they were married. Caroline would have made him explore his past and he wanted to keep running from his past. The author descirbes Norah as the good sister who always did what she was told and what was expected of her. She did not ask too many questions. She did what a wife was suppose to do especially during those times. She was not educated and that made her a little naive. On the other hand Caroline was educated, grew up with older parents, who doted on her every need and she was compassionate. David was scared of a relationship with Caroline. Also, before he woke up, he was dreaming about his past. Caroline could see all of his expressions and probably his pain as he was sleeping. He could not bring himself to even look at her straight. Caroline thought because she saw his vunerable side and he saw her love for him, he would approach her because of the connection. In fact she was still waiting until she saw the annoucement in the paper. So I agree, David married Norah to escape from Caroline. He was safe. He could live a lie. He could not do that with Caroline, but it caught up with him when he lied about Phoebe. I think it was easier for him to hide form his past because everybody was dead. He could not hide from the fact he gave Phoebe away because she was alive and doing well. I loved how the author demonstrated the symbolism between Caroline and Norah and the events that follwed in the book!

I think the moment where David and Caroline shared that look was to show the reader that there was a connection between the two. However, David marries Norah?!? How come? I agree with what both of you said. David married Norah to escape his past. Norah is described as refined and classy; something that does not describe his past. He wanted Norah to fulfill a part of his life that he never had before. There is a bond between Caroline and David with Phoebe that did not exist between Norah and David. At times I felt like their relationship was forced…not real. I felt like they were both putting on a façade for one another not showing their true selves.
